On Shopify
Put them all on one discount
- Install Otherwise and build the discount, or start from one of its ready-made setups: tiers, any 3 for $20, a VIP gift, and more.
- On the discount's page, go to Codes and choose Add codes.
- Choose I have a list and paste these, or Make them up for me and Otherwise makes them.
They are extra codes on the same discount, not separate discounts, so one change to the discount reaches every code, and pausing it stops them all. Usage limits and dates are in the discount's settings.
Good codes
Codes people can type
Long enough to be safe
Eight random characters from 31 letters and numbers gives 853 billion codes, so nobody finds one by guessing.
Short enough to type
Past 12 characters, people make mistakes. A short prefix and eight characters reads well on a card or an email.
Easy to trace
A prefix per promotion, like INFLUENCER- or POPUP-, shows in your orders where each sale came from.
Questions
About the generator
Are the codes kept anywhere?
No. They are made in your browser with its secure random number generator, and never sent to us or anyone else. Close the page and they are gone, so download or copy them first.
How many codes can I make?
Up to 10,000 at a time. The tool checks that every code in a batch is different, and tells you when the length you chose doesn't leave enough room for that many.
How do I put thousands of codes on one Shopify discount?
With Otherwise: open the discount, go to Codes, choose Add codes, then I have a list, and paste them. Or choose Make them up for me and Otherwise makes them. They are extra codes on the same discount, so your Discounts page stays tidy.
Can I use the codes somewhere other than Shopify?
Yes. They are plain text, one per line, so any store, email tool or spreadsheet that takes a list will take them.
Why leave out look-alike characters?
0 and O, 1, I and L are easy to mix up when someone reads a code off a card or a screen and types it in. Leaving them out costs a little room, so make codes a character longer if you need more of them.
